This portrait of a distinguished and resolute Ella Gertrude Clanton Thomas was painted in 1899, approximately eight years before her death. That year (1899) marked the pinnacle of Thomas’s public career, when she was elected President of the Georgia Woman Suffrage Association. The artist was Elizabeth Sherwood (“Lizzie”) Jeter, who was well-known in Atlanta for her portraits and her exhibitions on Whitehall St. Jeter’s beautiful work now hangs in a place of honor in the foyer of Carolyn Curry’s home.
